NEW YEAR'S HIGHLIGHTS

HUBBLE's Hi-DEF "PILLARS OF CREATION"

January 5, 2015:  "Pillars of Creation", taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 1995, is so breathtaking that it quickly became iconic.  The image revealed never-before-seen details of three giant columns of cold gas bathed in the scorching ultraviolet light from a cluster of young stars in a small region of the Eagle Nebula (M16).  Now, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, Hubble has revisited the famous pillars, providing astronomers with  a sharper and wider viewMore on this story . . .

2015 WILL BE LONGER THAN 2014!

Does time occasionally feel like it is dragging on more slowly?  If so, this year there may be a reason—for one second's worth anyway!  At the end of June 30th this year, one  "leap second"  must be added to the world's timekeeping to keep its systems synchronized.  This must be done infrequently because our Earth's rotation is slightly irregular and is in general slowing down.  Though such change is extremely gradual, it must be accounted for to keep the marvels of our modern world, like GPS systems, operating accurately.  IERS "Leap Second" Announcement.  In any event, after June 30th if someone asks you, "Hey, do you have a second?", you can honestly answer, "Yes, I do!"

HUGE CORONAL HOLE MARS SUN'S
COMPLEXION ON NEW YEAR'S DAY!

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory reports that our  Sun began 2015  exhibiting a huge coronal hole near its south pole!  While  coronal holes  are not unusual, this one appeared wider than 50 Earths set side-by-side!  (Relatively speaking, a blotch of this size on the face of a starlet would send her sobbing summarily to her set's make-up trailer!)  Coronal holes affect the Sun's ejection of material and therefore influence the  space weather  encountered by our planet.

For information on all the latest 2015 sky events (and sky marvels)  check out our NEWS page.

Check out our exciting new  Exoplanets  and  Deep-Sky Objects  pages!  And don't miss all of the awesome new interactives, animations and videos that have recently been added to our Sun, Earth, Moon, Mars, etc. pages!

FEATURING . . .

LOOK FOR HIDDEN TREASURES!

Like the universe itself, SkyMarvels™ contains many hidden treasures!  It is a site of constant discovery!  So don't be surprised if running your mouse cursor over a planet or moon or other image suddenly reveals additional info about what you are viewing, or perhaps a hidden link.  Will you discover all of these hidden treasures?

Here are a few hints.  First, if you slowly run your cursor over "The Visible Electromagnetic Spectrum" in the left column of this page and you will see the approximate theoretical wavelengths of various colors of light.  Also, try clicking on the small rotating Earth at the upper right, just below the main menu.  An information page about the Earth will appear, and hovering over that page's Earth will show its interior structure!  (While you're there, try clicking on the Moon and, when the larger Moon appears, hover over it!)

SkyMarvels™ is full of such treasures for you to enjoy!
